AsiaRooms.com - Enjoy the Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race in September
Youngsters from Dubai will compete in a dhow sailing race towards the end of next month.
DUBAI, UAE, August 12, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- One of the biggest events on the Middle Eastern watersports calendar, the Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing Race, will be contested off the coast of the emirate next month.
Set to take place on September 25th 2010, the occasion is one of the rounds of the current dhow racing season, in which crews made up of teenagers do battle in their 22ft long vessels.
Boats of this nature were introduced by the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) - which organises the race - around a decade ago, with the intention of using them to train youngsters to take up the sport of sailing.
This initiative has proven to be "extremely successful", according to the DIMC, which points out that the dhow championships had 50 entrants last year.
Crews of between three and five people take part in the race, with only the skipper of each ship allowed to be over the age of 17. Furthermore, all entrants must be nationals of the United Arab Emirates.
The DIMC Marina is located just a stone's throw away from a number of Dubai hotels on the luxurious Jumeirah coastline, overlooking Palm Island.
Up to 300 impressive looking boats, measuring between 25 and 60ft in length, can be moored at the site at any one time.
For more information on this event, visit the Dubai International Marine Club website or contact the organiser on (+971) 4 3995777.
