Coast Guard Auxiliary and Good Samaritan assist Alliance
/Boating News Articles/ - ANCHORAGE, Alaska, August 28, 2005 - The Coast Guard Auxiliary safely delivered six personnel to Seward today after their vessel, the Alliance, sank near Barwell Island.
Coxswain Shane Taylor of Eagle River, AK and Crewman Kevinn Smith of Seward, AK manned the Coast Guard Secure Around Flotation Equipped (SAFE) boat out of Seward Small Boat Harbor.
The Coast Guard received a mayday call from the master of the fishing vessel Alliance at about 1:30 a.m. He stated that the vessel had struck a rock at Cape Resurrection and was sinking. He and the crew donned immersion suits and abandoned ship.
Both Auxiliarist's were on call and at their respective homes. Within 13 minutes of their notification, they were able to arrive at their dock, start the SAFE boat's engines and get underway.
The Good Samaritan vessel Black Velvet retrieved the six people from their skiff and rendezvoused with the Coast Guard Auxiliary vessel at approximately 02:00 a.m.
The four adults and two four year-old twins arrived in Seward in good condition at about 3:34 a.m.
At 11:30 a.m., the Coast Guard Marine Safety Office (MSO) in Anchorage dispatched investigators to the scene. Auxiliarist's Shane Taylor and Craig Williamson of Seward, AK assisted the MSO Investigators in finding the Alliance.
The 93-foot vessel Alliance, which sank in about 50 fathoms of water has nearly 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel onboard and 244,000 pounds of King salmon. Initial attempts at finding either debris or an oil sheen proved evasive.
The Civil Air Patrol has been asked to do a fly over to see if there is any oil sheens visible from the air.
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is composed of uniformed, non-military volunteer's who assist the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions, except for military and direct law enforcement. These men and women can be found on the nation's waterways, in the air, in classrooms and on the dock, performing Maritime Domain Awareness patrols, safety patrols, vessel safety checks and public education.
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary was founded in 1939 by an Act of Congress as the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and re-designated as the Auxiliary in 1941. Its 31,000 members donate millions of hours annually in support of Coast Guard missions.
